3 March 2023, Singapore – Singapore-based power generation and electricity retailer, PacificLight, is inviting primary, secondary and tertiary students to submit innovative ideas under its annual Crea8 Sustainability Competition.

As part of PacificLight’s community collaboration program, the Crea8 Sustainability competition was created to inspire youths to be drivers for sustainability. The competition aims to, through practical activities, focus on the importance of building a circular economy surrounding upcycling and recycling, in line with the Singapore Green Plan 2030 – Sustainable Living, Green Citizenry.

Crea8 Sustainability adopts different themes each year to inspire young Singaporeans to embark on their environmental journey through creative self-expression and critical thinking. Since the competition started in 2016, students have presented insightful ideas on tackling environmental issues, ways to reduce our carbon footprint and solutions that could create a greener future for Singapore.

The theme of the 2023 Crea8 Sustainability Competition is ‘The Green Key’, aimed to prompt students to dive deeper into sustainability and what it means to be climate positive.

Primary students are encouraged to turn waste into something useful by creating upcycled artwork with items that cannot be recycled. Secondary and Tertiary students are challenged to articulate their visions and use their online voices to create a short video that encourages, educates and advocates on issues surrounding sustainability.

“It is important for the energy industry to stay at the forefront of sustainability. As an environmental steward since our plant commenced operation in 2013, PacificLight continuously looks for ways to further improve our plant efficiency and be an active participant in Singapore’s energy transition. Through our Crea8 Sustainability program, we hope to support and guide youths and the wider community in achieving a sustainable future for Singapore,” said Mr. Yu Tat Ming, Chief Executive Officer, PacificLight.

PacificLight owns and operates an 800MW combined cycle power plant on Jurong Island that generates close to 10% of Singapore’s annual electricity needs. PacificLight is one of the most efficient power plants operating in Singapore, and it is the only power plant to be certified as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project under the United National Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCC). PacificLight is part of a Consortium currently developing a solar import project between Indonesia and Singapore, aligning with the Singapore Green Plan 2030.
